According to Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma is said to have started the creation of the universe at Ugadi. The first day of Chaitra Navratri, a nine-day festival honoring the nine forms of Goddess Durga, is celebrated as Ugadi to mark the beginning of the creation of Lord Brahma. Bhaskaracharya, an Indian mathematician, established Ugadi as the beginning of a new year, month and day in the 12th century.
How to Celebrate Ugadi in Telugu & Kannada
Ugadi is celebrated as Gudi Padwa by the people of Maharashtra. Both Ugadi and Gudi Padwa are celebrated on the same day.
The celebration of Ugadi requires elaborate preparation. People start preparations a week before the festival. They clean their homes and buy new clothes to make a fresh start. The houses are decorated with mango leaves and flowers. Rangoli is also an important part of the festival. Rituals like oil baths and worship of deities are part of Ugadi.
On the day of the Ugadi festival, people draw colorful patterns on the floor called muggulu and decorate the doors with mango leaves called torans. Buying new clothes and giving gifts, donating to the poor, oil treatment after a special bath, preparing and sharing a special food called Pachadi and visiting Hindu temples are some of the common rituals on this day.
North Indians do not celebrate Ugadi but start the nine-day Chaitra Navratri Puja on the same day and also eat neem along with sugar candy on the first day of Navratri.
